Nature and Wildlife in South Gower

Port Eynon

Port Eynon (SA3 1NN) is one of Gower’s more rugged beaches. The rocky shoreline is home to feral rock dove and a range of insects such as the grayling butterfly which thrive in the thick gorse and heather. Sedger’s Bank is a nature reserve that lies mainly under water, home to barnacles, mussels, whelks and coral weed. When the tide is very low, preserved tree stumps are exposed – the remains of an ancient forest.

Park Wood

Park Wood (SA3 2EH) was originally a medieval deer park, it’s now 164 hectares of mature trees including majestic oak and ash and home to a range of birds, plants and animals including the rare horseshoe bat. It is also designated site of geological and biological SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). The park contains many historical monuments including a traditional Lime Kiln from the mid 1800s and Giant’s Grave, a burial tomb dating from the Neolithic period where bone fragments from 40 humans have been found.
