Family mountain bike trail

The 5.5 km green graded mountain trail is suitable for beginners and provides a great introduction to mountain biking.

Afan Forest Park has a worldwide reputation amongst mountain bikers as a top destination because of its very testing and high adrenaline trails.  The new facilities not only improve the visitor experience but also diversify the range of trails available to ride.

A skills area has also been developed along the trail that will be used for tuition and helping youngsters improve their technical skills.

The other developments going on in the Afan Valley include the redesign of the visitor centre to make it more open and inviting with improved access to the South Wales Miners' Museum. In addition there will be another Blue graded loop opening in a couple of weeks for those with more experience.

Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage Huw Lewis said: "The opening of the new facilities at the Afan Forest Park is excellent news for the area. Both the improved visitor centre and the new family mountain bike trail will provide an excellent incentive to local people to get active and to enjoy the scenery as well as providing employment opportunities and attracting visitors from further afield who will be contributing to the local economy. It is an excellent example of how one project can benefit many different people in different ways."

The improvements are part of Cognation, mtb trails South Wales; a partnership project and that is part-funded by the EU's Convergence European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government with match funding coming from the Welsh Government's Western Valleys Regeneration Area and partner organisations.
