Sustainable Tourism

Find out how YOU can make a difference...

The City & County of Swansea's Tourism Team is committed to promoting sustainable tourism in Swansea Bay, Mumbles and Gower

Please help us preserve this beautiful area of Britain for future generations:

Before you go

Find out about Swansea Bay before you travel, including how to get here by public transport, park and ride sites, local producers and farmer's markets, dog-friendly beaches and recycling facilities in the area.  All this information and more can be found on our 'Exploring by Bus' and 'BayTrans' pages (link on the right).

When booking accommodation in the area, ask if your host is a member of the 'Green Tourism Business Scheme' (the UK's national sustainable tourism certification scheme), or has other 'environment-friendly' accreditation.

In Swansea Bay, Mumbles and Gower

Please do your best not to litter, since plastic containers can take thousands of years to biodegrade and can seriously harm wildlife.  Help prevent fragile environments from being polluted by taking your rubbish home or to the nearest recycling facility. The City & County of Swansea is committed to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill every year, and has produced some guidance on how to 'reduce, reuse and recycle'.

Please respect nature reserves and stick to footpaths and bridleways. Protect plants and animals, and always leave gates and property as you found them, keeping dogs under close control. Always follow the Countryside Code.

Shopping in locally owned, independent outlets and eating in local restaurants helps to put money back into the local community and reduces 'food miles'.

By the sea

When enjoying our pristine beaches, please help to protect these fragile environments and ensure that their natural beauty is preserved by not discarding waste food, litter or oil in the water.  Do not remove stones, sand or flora from the beaches.

If you are concerned about a local environmental issue, please ring the City & County of Swansea's Environment Department on 01792 635600.

In your accommodation

You can save water by taking showers instead of baths, by reporting any leak to the owner immediately, and by using towels more than once.  You can save electricity by switching off lights and not leaving the TV on standby.

Let us know how you can help make Wales a sustainable destination. You can email us examples of good practice and innovative ideas at SwanseaTourismMarketing@swansea.gov.uk - Thank you for your support!
